Monty and his carbon paw print

The humans are getting very excited about a thing called COPP27 – I thought that this had something to do with the police-humans, but apparently not. The COPP27 is a big meeting of government representatives in Egypt (a very interesting country where they used to worship cats). The government humans will talk about saving the plannit.

I hear that the humans all over the world are making a bit of a mess of taking care of the plannit. They are using up lot of fossil fules and messing the place up with waste and plastiks.

We cats are very clean creatures and we don’t like mess or waste. I am particularly fussy and like things to be tidy, so I do not understand why some humans don’t want to take care of the plannit. My humans are quite well behaved. They do lots of recycling, they turn down the heating in the house and walk or cycle most of the time instead of getting into the human carrier for short trips. They even take me to the vet on the bike, which was pretty scary at first, but now I am used to it.

Mont – at one with the plannit

I have been thinking about ways that I can help to save the plannit and got the She Human to do a bit of research to see what sort of damage I am doing with my daily habits.

An average cat creates about 310 kg of CO2 waste a year. A lot of that is down to the meat in our food, but other things like buying cat toys from the shops and cat equipment like leads and collars also push up the average cat’s CO2 output. I have one question to ask about that, cat toys? what are those? You mean that humans buy toys for their cats from the shops? This is the first that Mont has heard of this concept. I was quite upset to hear that I was missing out on toys and stuff, so raised my objections with the She-Human.

According to the She Human it is all about sustainability – i.e. that human (and cat) habits do as little damage as possible to the plannit. Apparently it is better for the plannit for me to play with her nitting wool or the cardboard thing inside a toilet roll than it is for her to go to the pet shop and buy me a plastic mouse. ‘Why buy a plastic mouse for you Mont’, she says, ‘when there are lots of perfectly good real mice out there in the garden for you to see off?’.

The diet required for a healthy cat has an effect on the plannit. The meat that we have in our dinners is very bad. Humans are talking about other ways for us cats to get our protein like by eating insekts. This sounds like a good idea, I eat insekts quite a lot in the garden, but if the humans are going to go down this road, please could they make sure that they don’t put any insekts in our dinners that sting. I have had a number of instances of chasing a bee-insekt in the garden, biting down on it and then it stings me. This leaves me with a painful mouth and the bee-insekt flies off to fight another day. Whilst I am sure that cat dinners are having their effect on the plannit, I would like to point out that us cats eat the part of the meat that the humans don’t want to. We make sure that nothing gets wasted, which is very good for the plannit.

Mont will continue to do his bit for the plannit by playing with the She-Human’s wool, chasing real mice in the garden and eating insekts. I suspect that my carbon pawprint is lower than the average cat because of the lack of toys and the other odds and ends that other cats take for granted. It’s good to know that I am doing my bit, but I do wonder sometimes if Mont’s environmentally friendly lifestyle has more to do with my humans not wanting to spend human money in the pet shop.

Hey Monty, I do not speak cat language and hope your human can translate for you.
It is nice to see that you are a good and clever pussycat and that you can keep your humans under control. As for toys, you don’t need them and you would be bored very soon with a fake reality mouse, bird, etc. What could be better than a lovely carpet or settee to shred to pieces just for fun or if your humans are neglecting or forgetting to feed you?
I am a bit bored too, after the Carry On PM comedies in the House of Common with BoJo and Truss the Lettuce, it seems Sunak is not so much fun.
Looking forward to hear more of your stories and look after your humans ….
